Dear Sex Doc,
I am allergic to latex, should I use sheepskin condoms?
Latex Allergy
Dear Latex Allergy,
No, you shouldn’t use sheepskin, lambskin, or any other ‘natural’ condoms. The problem with these condoms is that they naturally have tiny little holes in them. These holes are larger than sperm and most of the viral and bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, ‘natural’ condoms do not protect you from pregnancy and STIs.
Many individuals have latex allergies or sensitivities. Plastic (polyurethane) condoms have been manufactured for these individuals. Polyurethane condoms are stronger than latex condoms so they are less likely to break. Also, plastic condoms are very thin and conduct heat very well, which means that they are very sensitive. Many guys say these are the most sensitive condoms on the market.
Male and female condoms come in plastic versions. The female condom or ‘Reality’ is made of polyurethane. There are two reputable male plastic condoms on the market. Durex makes one called ‘Avanti’ and Trojan has one called ‘Supra.’
Best regards,
Dr. Brian Parker
