Are guys hornier than girls?

Dear Sex Doc,

I read somewhere that guys think about sex over thirty times per day and women only think about it once per day. Is this really true? Are guys really that much hornier than girls?

Thinkin’ Bout Sex

Dear Thinkin’ Bout Sex,

I get this question a lot. And, if we’re talking about a 14 year-old boy, chances are he’s thinking about scoring or rubbing his penis up against something every few minutes.

However, for adults this couldn’t be further from the truth. Guys do think about doing the deed more then women, but not by much.

One study asked guys and girls how often they think about doing the horizontal tango. Fifty-five percent of males and 42% of females said more than ten percent of the time. Pretty impressive.

Another study asked 4,420 individuals if they had a sexual thought in the past five minutes. Of the people aged 14 to 25, 52% of the guys and 39% of the gals said ‘yes.’

So it seems like guys think about sex about ten percent more than women, not the whopping 3000% you suggested.

An individual’s sex drive is determined by the amount of testosterone in their body. The more testosterone they have, the hornier they are.

Many women do suffer from low testosterone levels, especially as they age. In fact, the most common female sexual dysfunction is lack of desire. Almost one in three adult women suffer from it. And testosterone starts to drop for boys after the age of thirty.

Most people think there are huge differences between men and women sexually. In fact, we are much more alike in the sexual realm than most people realize.

Best regards,

Dr. Brian Parker
