Do I Need To Use A Condom Even If Im Past Menopause?
Dear Dr. Trina,
Pregnant no: STI or HIV maybe.
In the last five years Health Canada has noted a concerning trend: one in five AIDS cases were people over 50. Here are a few reasons why this group is becoming more at risk. Our society believes seniors are sexless. Seniors don’t see themselves as an at-risk group. This group did not switch partners and engage in casual sex the way people do today. The use of condoms was solely meant to ward off pregnancy. Many doctors feel uncomfortable speaking to a senior about their sexual habits. Too many seniors have watched as their doctor squirmed, gave a brief answer and moved on. Sadly a lot of seniors only feel comfortable discussing such matters with their GP. Sometimes it’s not easy to diagnose HIV or AIDS in seniors. Since some of the symptoms of AIDS are similar to conditions related to aging, doctors may not test for the virus. There is a delicate, cultural belief that states that the man is in charge. Although these women are nobody’s pushover, if the female initiates condom usage and he says no, she will likely acquiesce.
If you are a devilishly sexy single over sixty engaging in some fun sexual activity, please educate yourself on safe sex practices.
