Are there really swinging clubs out there?

Dear Sex Doc,

We’ve been married a long time. My wife suggested swinging after she saw it on Oprah. Are there really clubs out there or is that just a myth?

Swinging Suggestions

Dear Swinging Suggestions,

Yes, most major North American cities have at least one swinger’s club. A swinger’s club creates a safe space for sexually adventurous adult couples who are either exploring or involved in swinging.

Couples into the scene go to these clubs for a number of different reasons. Some go to swap partners. Others go because they like to watch and some go because they like to be watched. Some adventurous couples go for the group sex that sometimes takes place at these clubs.

But, just because your wife suggested giving it a try does not mean that it is right for either of you. Make sure that this is really what you want to do if you are going to move forward with this fantasy. Very few individuals are emotionally stable enough to watch their partner have sex with someone else.

If you both decide that this is something you would like to explore then make sure you set up some ground rules before going to the club. The first time you go to a swinger’s club you might not want to engage in any activity. You might want to just check things out to confirm whether or not this is for you or not. After that, if you and your wife are still interested exploring this scene you can set some rules as far as who can do what with whom.

Best regards,

Dr. Brian Parker
